Anabolic vs Catabolic

The word anabolic sends shivers down most ladies. Anabolic is associated with steroid abuse, insanely muscled guys, sporting cheats and just plain not right! Unfortunately this couldn’t be further from the truth.

Anabolic and catabolic refer to the state of the human body at any time and are at opposite ends of the scale. If you want to achieve improvements in the tone of your body and particularly to lose stubborn fat, then you really need to understand these terms.

Anabolic means the body is in a state of regeneration or repair and growth.

Catabolic means the body is in a state of degeneration or breakdown.

Would you want your body to be in a degenerative state? Anabolic does not mean that you are growing huge muscles, it means your body is trying to repair and regenerate. As you can appreciate, it is actually very much more preferable to be in an anabolic state than catabolic.

So now that we know we need to achieve an anabolic state, what are the factors that determine this and how can we control them?

As always, the two key factors that you can control are diet and exercise. To find out more, ask one of our nutritionally qualified fitness team.
